Fall & winter family photo season is just around the corner. So, I thought I would share some ideas on how to style your family for fall photos. I know my style may not be the same as yours. However, you may get some good ideas as to how to mix patterns and solids in your own way!

As I do with all my family or personal photoshoots, I try to get a vision of what I want our photos to look like. I also think of what’s currently in style and if I will be using these photos for a Christmas card! (I don’t want to have pumpkins in our Christmas card photos)
PHOTOS W/ A DENIM THEME
For photos with a denim theme, I like to stick with one color to pop, maybe two. I also like to have the denim spread out across the group, too. As you can see, in the middle photo, I used denim tops for the girls & broke it up with the pop of pink in their vests. For our family photos I decided to have the girls in a different outfit, Kennedy is not in jean at all. but does have a vest on, like her sister. Tying them kids together but breaking them up at the same time!

If you have a large family or group shot, pair off. The empty space gives depth. Above is an example of just one pop of color for a denim theme!
FORMAL IN-STUDIO OUTFITS
If you are thinking of doing a more formal session, in doors with a light background then I would suggest a champagne colored theme. The elegant lighting brings a glow that plays ofF the sequence of my dress and the top of Peyton’s dress. My sequence is a different color than Peyton’s but they compliment each other so it totally works. The bottom of her dress ties in the white from jakes dress shirt and the black pops in our family poses. You always want to think about what the outfits will look like when paired off and alone, on top of all together!
TYING IN DETIALS
To tie this option together I mix & matched pieces. Jake and I have matching black bottoms. Peyton has red on but a cream vest & pants. Jake has a darker gray top but I tied it in with Peyton on her bow. My scarf had gray and red which pulled everything together. We all have black boots on. These little style details make all the difference in the outcome of your photos!
FORMAL OUTDOOR PHOTOS
When you are outdoors, sometimes the color your choose needs to pop more than an in-studio session. I can not stress enough, how much the details play a roll in successful family styling! I think you guys can tell I like to use red in our photos, alot. But I know it’s a color that can really pop but also be used subtlety. Again, I went with girls in one color and Jake in another. I tied his outfit in with a small pop of our main color. To break the girls up from me, I found a dress with pattern. Their pattern looked good alone, with each other, one on one with jake & me and in our family shot! Additionally, all of us looked good in any combo when posing. I did not want to mix another print on the girls with the leopard. They would have clashed and not went well with photos of just the girls.
FORMAL IN THE SNOW
For these photos I wanted a new version of the photos we took when I was pregnant with Kennedy. You can see that I probably should have got us a little tanner before the session 🤣 I loved how these photos turned out though and the lighting played a little into the outcome. For this styling I switched up the black for gray and black on Jake. I keep the girls in cream from the waist down to tie in my champagne color & jakes white shirt.
Hopefully, you got some inspiration for how to style your family for fall photos. Remember its all in the details, no matter the color you choose!
